Synopsis & Plot Summary
In the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War, veteran soldier Saichi Sugimoto—feared on the battlefield as “Immortal Sugimoto”—ekes out a meager existence panning for gold in Hokkaido to fulfill a dying comrade’s wish. His luck changes when he learns the legend of a massive hidden fortune of Ainu gold, the map to which is tattooed across the bodies of 24 escaped convicts from Abashiri Prison. Sugimoto teams up with Asirpa, a highly skilled and pragmatic young Ainu girl whose father was murdered by the man who stole the gold. Together, they must brave the deadly Hokkaido wilderness and race against ruthless competitors, including the fanatical First Lieutenant Tsurumi of the 7th Division and the legendary surviving members of the Shinsengumi led by Toshizo Hijikata.
